Endings and Beginnings
Summer might technically be around for another three weeks, but with school beginning on Tuesday, as far as the Stunthouse is concerned, summer is nearly over. Shoes are being tried on, clothes investigated. Pencil cases clutched. Haircut appointments made. It's not a bad time at all. In fact, it's rather an exciting one. I, like other children of teachers, still see September as the true start of the year. When I say "next year" I mean "next school year," the true year in which January 1 is only a comma.
The winds and smells of autumn are still tickling. They suggest newness and clean slates and sharp pencils. I just bought new shoes, responding to some inner timer. (Oh, and as a side note, can I tell you how terribly excited I am to discover that I can buy children's shoes? I apparently wear a child size 6 and have bought the same shoes as Helena, only in black. They're the biz-a-niz.)
Knitting is suddenly easier and more fluid. The windows are wide open, letting the autumn air in. The evenings are cooler, as are the mornings. And soon the days will have a steady rhythm, in contrast to the free jazz of summer. It's a strange time, a little sad, a little happy. Who knows what adventures await.

Oh yeah, I am so with you. I totally love this time of year.
Love it.
(You going to call me soon or what? I'm all nervous over here!)
I loved fall in Canada....California ... it gets cooler but no leaves change and that smell of fall is missing.
Ooo does knitting get easier in the fall?!?!?! That would be so cool!
In just a few short words, you've captured a whole season! Lucky you, size 6! I teach - oh, if only the pencils stayed sharp!
Fall always seems bittersweet, though I've been in places where it's always summer and I missed the change. Logically I know the end of one thing is also the beginning of another, but my emotions never did keep pace with my logic :)
I'm a 6 too. 6 + 5, that is.
No new shoes here, but a twinge of seasonal nostalgia almost resulted in the purchase of a field hockey stick from a suburban sporting goods store last week. Fall still=field hockey to me. I also want new shoes, sweaters and black compostion notebooks.
It's my favourite time of year.
