All those candles

On my twentieth birthday, I was in Cambridge and in love and pretty much as happy as I had ever been to that point. And as Ed (yes, that Ed) and I wandered back into college, a very drunk Justin slurred, "Iss yer birthday? Hap Birthday then, darling" and handed me two bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau which had just arrivee-d. I was completely tickled and had wine in both hands. A happy birthday indeed.

Life is a little less fancy-free these days. And I am less ticklish. Yet life just keeps on getting more saturated with color, more interesting and more complex -- unlike Beaujolais Nouveau which is only even vaguely palatable when it's young. I am today as old as I have ever been, and tomorrow I will be older still. I am content to be so. I am happy.

happy birthday to me
happy birthday to me
happy birthday to meeeeeeeeeeee
happy birthday to me.

I wrote this for my daughter whose birthday is today and see it's your birthday, too, so here you go. Change the page number to fit :) Happy Birthday!

Earth turned from dark to dawn
Flooding the sky with light
Orange on the horizon
Like a fire lit along the ridge of the mountain.
Leafless trees rubber-stamped themselves
Against the glow.
Crows called, “Wake! Wake!” into the morning.

The sun pointed its long finger
Illuminating this new day
One not previously lived
By anyone.
The pages of your life number 33
And each day
You get to write another.

Write on!

Oh this post did so much for me. Most importantly probably, it made me realize I need to lighten up about holidays so as not to turn into your mother.

I kind of act the way you described sometimes on holidays.

And revisionist? Yes. I undersatnd that completely, my family are masters at that- so incidentally is my boss. Very frustrating.

Happy Birthday.

I always thought the problem with Beaujolais Nouveau was that it, like youth, was highly volatile and, like youth, needed to be drunk quickly (as in within moments of being bottled). And when the bottle of the young wine has been drunk, we can all look be glad we drank it, but look forward to drinking older, more complex, yummier wines.

Now, get back to writing that novel!

Happy Birthday, sis,
I'm also, alas, older today than I was yesterday. And lack your sweet good attitude about it.

I've always been of the "beats the alternative" opinion when it comes to birthdays. Happy birthday (a little late).

AH! It's a fine time of year to be born and a fine time of year to be in Cambridge Cambridge (which is where I met Ed and thus - if it weren't already - one of the most perfect places in the world to me).
